Action Alert: Tell Legislature No on tax increaseThe Idaho Affiliate of the American Family Association
Thursday, April 30, 2009
Bryan Fischer, Executive Director
NOTE: Please forward to your friends and family members in Idaho. This is the Shootout at the O.K. Corral. IVA ACTION ALERT: SEND EMAIL TO ENTIRE LEGISLATURE TODAY ON GAS TAX INCREASE Governor Butch Otter and the Idaho Senate are now playing a game of chicken with the Idaho House, which finished the people’s business last night around 9 p.m. and went home. It’s an Idaho standoff, and the only question is who will blink first. The Governor continues to insist on an $80 million tax increase during Idaho’s worst recession in decades. And he appears to be dug in: the headline on Dan Popkey’s Idaho Statesman article today reads, “Don’t look for Otter to back down.” Writes Popkey, “The only way that changes is if the Senate abandons Otter. If that happ ens ... Otter will switch ... and let the Legislature go.”The Senate is certain to call the House back into session on Monday for one purpose: to force the House to raise your taxes on gasoline. Twenty-one of the 28 Republican senators have already voted to raise your taxes six cents a gallon, while the House has already voted no less than six times against a gas tax increase of any amount. What part of “No” does the Senate not understand? What part of “No” does the Governor not understand? A comparatively small tax increase may not seem like much, but while death by a thousand cuts takes longer and may be less painful, at the end you’re still just as dead. Today is the day to let the entire legislature know that you are strongly opposed to a tax increase which will raise the cost of transportation for your family and your business. Below you will find the email addresses for every single member of the Idaho legislature. Simply copy and paste each list into the “To” line of your email, write one mail to the entire legislature (keep it brief), and hit “Send.” Instantly, your message will go to all 105 legislators. (I’ve broken the entire list into three shorter lists of 35, since some of you may have servers which do not allow you to send emails to more than 50 people at a time. You may have to send your email three times, once to each of these lists.) DON’T FORGET TEA PARTY II: MONDAY AT NOON AT THE CAPITOL ANNEX This rally will be brief – from noon to 12:30 p.m. - for the simple and singular purpose of letting House members know we support their opposition to tax increases, and to let the Senate know that the will of the people is no new taxes in a recession. If you attended the April Tea Party with a sign, bring that same sign on Monday. The key to the success of the rally: people, signs, and energy. And if you attended the April 15 Tea Party, this proposed tax increase is exactly what that event was all about. Here is our chance to press the case that we are indeed Taxed Enough Already, and to make a public and substantial impact on Idaho’s tax policy. The Senate, the House and the Governor will all be around on Monday, and believe me, they will be paying attention. (The Capitol Annex, by the way, is across the street to the east of the state capitol, which is being renovated.) If you value the work of the IVA, please consider a donation today. Information on how to donate, including making a secure online donation, may be found here. Thank you! |
