"Joy of Gay Sex" in Nampa Public Library

“JOY OF GAY SEX” IN NAMPA LIBRARY; TEACHES TEENS HOW TO CRUISE THE INTERNET FOR GAY SEX

Last week, I received the following communication from Randy Jackson. Randy is a friend, a solid citizen, and a devoted husband and father who lives in Nampa. Prepare to be outraged.

Bryan,

I am writing you in hopes that you could put this out on your e-mail list, and perhaps attend the following event.

On Monday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m. I will be attending the Nampa City Council meeting to discuss with them some very controversial books found on the Library shelves.  The book titles include “The New Joy of Sex”, “The Joy of Sex Toys”, and “The Joy of Gay Sex”.  In total, there are 9 books we are taking to City Council.

All of these books have one common problem that we are bringing to their attention:  They have several very detailed, graphic, sexually explicit drawings and some photographs all of which are people in sexual positions.  I am not talking about a scientific “this is your body” thing; these images are very pornographic in nature.  They are the type of books that most parents would be horrified if they found their children looking at them.

There is a further complaint, however, about “The Joy of Gay Sex”.  The written content is above and beyond what anyone would want to find at a library.  It includes a chapter entitled “Daddy/Son Fantasies” which discusses sex between two people pretending to be father and son while having sex (there is no distinction on whether the chapter is referring to consenting adults or not); there is a chapter on “on-line cruising” where it explains the best way to meet people for sex in on-line chat rooms; and even a chapter written TO teenagers, explaining to them how to explore their sexuality, how to hook up with peers for sex, how to meet people on the internet for sex, and encourages teens to learn to erase their web browser history so their parents can’t find out where they have been to when on-line.

Overall, these books are bought and paid for with taxpayer’s money, and I believe that most parents would be very upset to find out that these were available to anyone, including their children, at the Nampa Public Library.

If you have any questions, you are free to call me at the following phone numbers: 703-1706, or 899-3676.

Thank you,

            Randy Jackson

It gets even worse

Things are even worse than Randy mentions. The book contains a graphic illustration of two men engaged in “fisting,” in which one man inserts his fist into his partner’s rectum, all, of course, part of the “Joy of Gay Sex.” (If reading this shocks you, imagine the reaction of a 10 year old seeing it while looking for a Dr. Seuss book.)

Please bear in mind that this book was discovered sitting out on a table in the middle of the library where anyone, including young children, could come across it. It is normally stocked on the third shelf right across from the history section, again within easy reach of young children.

Randy has approached both the library staff and board without result. His last resort is the Nampa City Council, which does have authority, according to a conversation I had with Mayor Dale on Friday, to remove this book from the library.

Please call Mayor Tom Dale, and forward this message to other likeminded friends

Friends, if you are as outraged as I am at this careless and irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars, please call Mayor Dale’s office and then forward this message to likeminded friends all across the country.

No matter where you live, call Mayor Tom Dale at (208) 468-5401. Please leave this message with his office: “I’d like to thank Mayor Dale for his stand on the Ten Commandments, and urge him and the Nampa City Council to remove ‘The Joy of Gay Sex’ from the Nampa Public Library.”

(Nampa Mayor Tom Dale stood strong two years ago when a hate group threatened the city’s Ten Commandments monument, in stark contrast to the mayor and city council of Boise, who surrendered without firing a shot.)

Mayor Dale needs to hear from citizens from all over the state of Idaho, and even from around the country, so he has some awareness of the level of support he will receive for taking firm action.

Today, Monday, May 15, 2006, Nampa City Hall has become the epicenter of the battle for our nation’s soul and character. Every concerned citizen has a stake in this decision.

Please attend the Nampa City Council meeting if you can

If you live in the Nampa area, please attend tonight’s Nampa City Council meeting. It begins at 7:00 PM at Nampa City Hall, 411 3rd Street South.

Not censorship, no First Amendment protection

Two thoughts in closing.

1.  This is a matter of selectivity, not censorship. No library can stock every book that is printed. Libraries make decisions every day about which books they will purchase and add to their circulation. Titles are rejected every day on the basis of content and suitability.

2. The First Amendment protects speech, not obscenity. We will surely hear bleating from the left about the First Amendment and freedom of speech. The Founders were specifically protecting political speech when they enacted the First Amendment, and never intended to provide cover for obscenity, pornography, exotic dancing, or even profanity.
