ACLU bullies Nampa into submissionThe Idaho Affiliate of the American Family Association

ACLU BULLIES NAMPA LIBRARY INTO RESTOCKING PORNOGRAPHIC BOOKS
As the press release I sent earlier indicates, the ACLU once again has used merely the threat of an expensive lawsuit to intimidate a community into cowering in meek submission to its bullying tactics.
The ACLU, of course, cites the First Amendment, as if the Founders intended to protect pornography rather than political speech.
Some things are worth fighting for, and one of them is protecting the sexual innocence of young children. It’s unfortunate that Nampa city officials apparently do not have the stomach for that fight, afraid that an activist judge
will deprive them of their right to govern themselves. But by capitulating without firing a shot, they have already forfeited their right to govern themselves and have succumbed to a form of tyranny. The policy enacted by the Nampa Library Board was a classic case of the republican form of government in action. Concerned citizen and father Randy Jackson worked diligently over the course of two years to persuade the board to remove pornographic books from library shelves in order to make the library a kid- and family- friendly place.
That all of it can be undone with just a letter and a 42 cent stamp is surely an indication of the way in which judicial activism is trashing liberty, community standards, and our democratic form of government.
According to a member of the IVA network, the Nampa librarian, who has resisted all efforts to remove these pornographic books from library shelves, is a member in good standing at College Church of the Nazarene in Nampa. Barry Myers, a Nampa Library Board member who has voted every time to keep these books within reach of young children, is on the faculty of Northwest Nazarene University.
IVA IN THE NEWS: NAMPA LIBRARY
Nampa City Attorney Terry White said the cost to litigate a major First Amendment case could easily exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Keller said he believes the June policy change was a good compromise, but that the
financial viability of the public library was paramount. But Idaho Values Alliance Executive Director Bryan Fischer disagreed with the board’s vote and the ACLU’s actions.
“This is just another pathetic example of the use of bullying tactics by the ACLU to trash community values with threats of an expensive lawsuit,” Fischer wrote in a late Monday night press release. “The First Amendment was designed by the Founders to protect political speech, not pornography.”

“40 DAYS FOR LIFE” GOAL: ABORTION FREE STATES
This year’s “40 Days for Life” prayer vigil at Boise’s Planned Parenthood will begin on September 24 and run through November 2. A kick-off event for this human rights campaign will take place at the Anne Frank Memorial on Tuesday evening, September 23, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
The goal of the vigil is, through the power of prayer, to make Idaho in time an abortion-free state.
The goal is already in reach in North Dakota and Mississippi, each of whi
ch has just one remaining abortion facility, and Nebraska and Kentucky, which have just two.“40 Days for Life” prayer vigils will be conducted outside each of these six death chambers. Two abortion centers that were the sites of previous 40 Days for Life vigils have gone out of business this year, one in Dallas, Texas and the other in Rockland County, New York.
Said David Bereit, director of this nationwide effort that will take place in 170 communities around the nation, “It was the power of a peaceful, prayerful presence that helped make a difference in these communities. With God’s help, we look forward to seeing which will be the first abortion-free state in America.”
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: A HISTORIC DAY FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN AMERICA
“Pulpit Freedom Sunday” is an Alliance Defense Fund-sponsored event designed to challenge a 54-year-old and utterly unconstitutional IRS regulation that has muzzled pastors for over five decades.
Despite the plain meaning of the First Amendment, which denies to the federal government any right to interfere with the free exercise of religion, the IRS has for half a century be
en dictating sermon content to the pastors of America by threatening to cancel their tax exempt status if they talk frankly about the public policy positions of candidates for public office. If there is any one thing Thomas Jefferson’s “wall of separation” was intended to do, it was to prevent the federal government from telling pastors what they can and cannot preach.
Yet since Sen. Lyndon Johnson snuck an amendment to IRS regulations in 1954, with no legislative analysis or debate, as payback for two non-profit organizations (not even churches!) who had opposed his candidacy, the IRS has been in flagrant violation of the Constitution. Prior to 1954, pastors had complete freedom to exercise their constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of speech without fear of bureaucratic repression.
But churches are not tax exempt because they are non-political organizations, they are tax exempt because they are non-profit organizations.
The ADF is recruiting dozen of pastors to defy this blatantly wrong policy on Sept. 28. One of my chief regrets at no longer having a pulpit of my own is that I am not in a position to join in this new campaign for religious liberty.
ADF will defend pro bono any pastor or church which comes under fire for talking directly and plainly about candidates for public office and how their positions compare to scriptural standards.
Said ADF attorney Erik Stanley, “We’re looking for churches that are serious-minded about this, churches that understand both the risks and the benefits.”
![]() Three dozen clergy from more than 20 states have signed up for this frontal assault on religious tyranny in the U.S.
Said Stanley, their sermons on that day “will be an evaluation of conditions for office in light of scripture and doctrine. They will make a specific recommendation from the pulpit about how the congregation would vote” in federal, state or local elections.
Opponents, zealous to confine the voice of the church within the four walls of their buildings, have elevated the petty rules of the IRS over the Constitution itself, calling this “Pulpit Initiative” a “reckless scheme” and a “stunt.” Funny, some said the same thing about the Boston Tea Party back in the day.
But as Stanley says, “We’re not encouraging any congregation to violate the law. What we’re encouraging them to do is exercise their constitutional right in the face of an unconstitutional law.” He correctly concludes, “It’s time to get the government out of the pulpits of America.”
