LEFT BEGINNING TO CONCEDE SALI RACE?

Polling data done for the uber-left Daily Kos website shows Rep. Bill Sali up over his challenger Walt Minnick by a 46%-35% margin. These are discouraging numbers for the left, for the poll was taken after Minnick had done extensive and expensive advertising and before Sali had aired his first television commercial. Sali’s advantage is well outside the poll’s margin of error (4.5%).

The Democrats realize that this election, Sali’s first re-election bid, likely represents their best and perhaps last chance to unseat the staunch conservative. If Sali wins this election, he likely can stay in Washington, D.C. as long as he wants to, a dismal prospect for the big government, higher taxes crowd.

Even the Kos is forced to admit sadly that the polling data “suggests Sali has the better odds” and that the race for Minnick “remains uphill.” The results, says the Kos, also may reflect the Palin effect, whose choice as Sen. McCain’s running mate “has the potential to reinvigorate" Sali’s supporters.

RealClearPolitics says the polling data suggests that “Idaho Rep. Bill Sali could be cruising toward a second” term. RealClear notes that party strategists in D.C. are giving Minnick an “inordinate amount of attention,” but suggests that their optimism about Minnick’s chances “may be a case of irrational exuberance.”

It goes without saying that both campaigns will run full tilt, as they both must and should, right up until Nov. 4. But the polling results will certainly energize Sali supporters for the remaining weeks of the campaign and be dispiriting to the Minnick camp.

Senate race

The senatorial race appears to be leaning decisively in Lt. Gov. Jim Risch’s direction. The Kos poll puts Risch at 56%, Democratic challenger Larry LaRocco at 33% and independent Rex Rammell at 3%. (An August poll conducted by Greg Smith and Associates showed Rammell’s support at 10%). Risch’s favorables are quite high, with 68% of Idahoans sharing a “favorable” or “very favorable” view of him, while LaRocco’s unfavorables are an alarmingly high 55%.

Presidential race

In the presidential race, McCain leads Obama by a huge 62%-33% margin, which the Kos says is an indication that “Palin has definitely fired up the wingnut base in Idaho.” The fact that the Kos calls 62% of Idahoans “wingnuts” when they in fact represent the view of mainstream Gem Staters is simply a reflection of how out of alignment the left is with ordinary American and Idaho values.

The bottom line analysis of Idaho races (including Sali’s) by the Kos: “Our guess is that the margins soften a little between here and November. But we don’t see at this point what would change them dramatically.”

E-VERIFY 99.5% ACCURATE, MUST BE RENEWED BY NOV. 30

E-Verify, which allows employers to check the immigration status of prospective employees, is now 99.5% accurate, according to a new paper by the Center for Immigration Studies. The E-Verify program is in use under certain circumstances in Idaho and 10 other states.

Since E-Verify became web-based in 2004, 85,816 employers representing over 446,000 work sites have signed up, and over 6.2 million queries have been processed.

More than 93 percent of employees are verified within five seconds, and another 1.2 percent are verified within 24 hours. About 5 percent are not confirmed as work authorized, a figure which matches the estimated percentage of illegal aliens in the workforce.

Many Idaho legislators and candidates for the state legislature support sanctions for Idaho employers who “knowingly” hire illegal aliens (see the Gem State Voter Guide, question #22). The E-Verify program provides a simple way for an employer to check a prospective employee’s legal status and also protects him in case an illegal slips through the net and passes the E-Verify screening process.

Only those employers who had illegals on the payroll and had refused to use E-Verify would be subject to penalties.

However, the E-Verify program is set to expire on November 30 unless re-authorized by Congress. The House overwhelmingly passed a reauthorization bill 407-2 but the Senate has yet to take up the matter.

  • It is not beyond the realm of possibility that the presidential race could end in an electoral college tie, 269-269. This would throw the presidential race into the House of Representatives, where Sen. Obama would almost certainly be chosen as president. But Sen. Lieberman’s support of the McCain ticket could result in a tie in the Senate, allowing Vice-President Cheney to cast the tie-breaking vote and resulting in Sarah Palin being selected as the Vice-President. All of which is a reminder that, according to the vision of the Founding Fathers, we should be choosing electors right now instead of a president. In other words, in the republican form of government they created, we should right now not be choosing a president but instead choosing the “electors” who would select a president for us.(Washington Times - 269 tie: An electoral college 'doomsday'?)

  • While our nation’s pundits continue to bloviate about the current financial crisis, taxpayers should take note that the Bush administration has quietly added student loans, car loans, credit card debt and any other “troubled” assets held by banks to the bailout program. Yep, you may soon be on the hook for students who default on college loans, consumers who bag out on their car loans and greedy consumers who run their credit card balances beyond their ability to pay. Look for this bailout package to get far worse and far more bloated with every passing day. Other companies and industries are already lining up to ask for their handouts, with credit card companies widely believed to be the next domino to fall. In other words, this massive bailout is unlikely to solve the problem.(Washington Times - Student, car debt quietly added to bailout plan)

  • The New York Times published an article in 1999 exposing the origins of the financial crisis we are experiencing today. It reveals the role of the Clinton administration in forcing mortgage lenders to underwrite risky loans to low-income clients, and warns of an eventual disaster should the real estate market take a downward turn. As Jeremiah Wright would say, America’s chickens have come home to roost. (Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending - New York Times) (hat tip: Adam Graham)

  • As people have done for thousands of years when facing a serious crisis, many on Wall Street have turned to prayer in recent days and weeks. With 350 banks on the “watch list” as potential failures, Christians on Wall Street set up special prayer meetings all last week, at places like Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, JP MorganChase, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Deloitte. Christians who work on Wall Street describe it as working on “the dark side,” and the atmosphere as “absurdly secular,” “out of balance,” and “egoistic.” If God is more concerned, as I believe he is, with the condition of our hearts than the condition of our wallets, perhaps his larger purpose in this crisis is to turn the hearts of this nation toward him. Perhaps then, and only then, will we begin to reverse the dramatic cultural and moral decline we have witnessed over the last four decades.(In Crisis, Wall Street Turns to Prayer | Christianity Today)

  • Secular fundamentalists are tyrants at heart, and have little if any regard for the conscience rights of people of faith. They may soon put Catholic hospitals in Australia’s state of Victoria out of business altogether, bringing to an end a 175-year tradition, due to an abortion bill that requires doctors who refuse to perform abortions to provide a referral to a doctor who will. Said the Melbourne archbishop, “In the worst-case scenario, if a government is determined to enforce such laws, we have no option. We might get out of hospitals altogether. Catholic hospitals cannot be part of any abortion ... Even providing a referral is a cooperation in evil.” Catholic adoption services in Australia, England and Massachusetts have shut down because authorities were compelling them to adopt children into homosexual households, thus depriving them of either a mother or a father. All this compulsion from people who claim to be pro-choice!(Abortion law threatens Catholic medical tradition)

  • More bad news for global warming hystericists. Early snowfall blanketed a number of areas in southern Africa late last week, and on Friday Durban experienced its coldest September night in recorded history.(News - Environment: Surprise spring snowfalls blanket KZN)
